SAN DIEGO, CA — Dinner and a show are nothing new, but at Le Petit Chef, the show is on your table.
The immersive dining experience at the Hilton San Diego Gaslamp Quarter combines 3D projection mapping, animated storytelling and a four-course meal, creating a dinner that feels more like an experience than a traditional night out.
As a Patch editor and mother, I recently visited with my 7-year-old son to see how the experience measured up for both adults and children.
My son was captivated from beginning to end, watching a tiny animated chef travel the world, prepare each course and compete for a coveted golden chef's hat.
For parents, that alone is worth noting: This is a restaurant where kids don't need a tablet to stay entertained.
Le Petit Chef follows a little French chef and his culinary companions from Spain, Italy and Japan as they embark on a culinary adventure. The action is projected directly onto the dining table, with the animated story tied to each course.
The roughly two-hour experience never seemed to lose my son's attention. He watched the characters move across the table, reacted to the action, and eagerly waited for each new part of the story.
Instead of asking when dinner would be over, he wanted to know what the little chef would do next.
Several families were dining during our visit, including two celebrating birthdays. Le Petit Chef offers special birthday treats for guests celebrating their birthdays, adding a festive touch to the evening.
There were also couples enjoying date night, making it clear that the experience appeals to more than just families. The animation gives families plenty to enjoy, but the food, atmosphere and production make it an appealing option for adults, too.
The food is an important part of the experience, and overall, it delivered.
The experience offers three menus: Classic ($169), Vegetarian ($139) and Junior ($89 for children ages 6 to 12).
The Classic menu includes tomato bread salad, truffle ravioli, grilled beef fillet with béarnaise sauce, and a Japanese-inspired dessert with white chocolate cake and matcha cream. The Vegetarian menu substitutes cauliflower steak for the beef, while the Junior menu features kid-friendly chicken and fries.
My son ordered the Junior menu, while I chose the Classic. The salad and steak were standouts, but dessert was the clear winner. The Mont Blanc was fantastic and also my son's favorite course.
Fittingly, the dessert ultimately won the animated competition for the coveted chef's hat. There's no spoiler here, since diners determine the winner with their applause and cheers at the end of the experience.
One of the things that sets Le Petit Chef apart is how much it encourages diners to interact with the experience. Guests are encouraged to take photos and videos, and staff even offer tips on the best camera settings to capture the projections.
A staff member also offered to take a photo of my son and me, giving us a keepsake from the evening.
The service throughout the dinner was attentive and friendly without distracting from the production. Servers kept the meal moving while allowing diners to remain focused on the story unfolding on the table.
And then there was the souvenir. At the end of the experience, we received a stuffed Le Petit Chef to take home, which quickly became a favorite. The stuffed chef has since earned a spot in my son's bed.
For parents, that may be one of the strongest endorsements possible.
Le Petit Chef also succeeds because it doesn't feel like a children's attraction that happens to serve adults. Couples were enjoying date night alongside families, and the dining experience gives adults plenty to appreciate beyond watching their children react to the animation.
Le Petit Chef delivers more than dinner with entertainment on the side. The food, animation and service come together to create an experience that keeps both kids and adults engaged.
The food was delicious, the service was attentive and the projections kept the evening moving. Most importantly, my son stayed engaged with me and the story throughout the two-hour experience without asking for a tablet or wondering when dinner would end.
He left with a full stomach, a memorable dinner and a new plush toy that has become a fixture in his bed.
For families and foodies looking for something beyond the usual dinner out, Le Petit Chef is an experience worth trying.
