The Count's Halloween Spooktacular Returning To Sesame Place San Diego (patch.com) — Families in San Diego can look forward to The Count's Halloween Spooktacular returning to Sesame Place San Diego in Chula Vista, with weekend festivities from Sept. 12 through Nov. 1. The park will feature a new Monster Mayhem Game Show, costume parades, scavenger hunts, trick-or-treating with reusable totes, and a Halloween Dine with Elmo, capped by a costume contest on Oct. 31.
2. Dead Oak Tree Finds New Life As Wildlife Habitat At San Diego Zoo (patch.com) — San Diego residents can see how the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance is turning a dead oak tree from its Samagatuma Ranch into valuable habitat and enrichment for animals. From condor perches and bird toys to aardvark digging logs and invertebrate shelters, nearly every part of the tree is being reused to support wildlife across the organization's local facilities.
3. San Diego County overdose deaths fell again in 2025, marking 4 years of decline (sandiegouniontribune.com) — Unintentional overdose deaths in San Diego County fell 11% in 2025, marking a fourth straight year of decline, but officials stress the toll remains high. Local leaders highlighted shifting drug trends, persistent racial disparities, and a new anti-fentanyl campaign featuring San Diego State athletes funded by opioid settlement dollars. The county is expanding education on Narcan, 911 calls, and Good Samaritan protections.
4. County supervisors push to construct new plant to treat Tijuana River sewage (sandiegouniontribune.com) — San Diego County supervisors are poised to launch an 18‑month plan for a new treatment plant near the U.S.-Mexico border to capture Tijuana River sewage before it hits local communities and beaches. The board will also consider funding design work for a permanent fix at polluted Saturn Boulevard, potentially backed by a November countywide sales tax measure that could generate up to $1 billion for long-term solutions.
5. Mold concerns temporarily close Monarch School, forcing 170 students to relocate. (nbcsandiego.com) — Monarch School in San Diego's Barrio Logan has temporarily closed its building for mold testing, sending all 170 K–12 students to two alternate campuses nearby. Younger students are now at Perkins K-8, older students are bused to National City, and officials expect test results and next steps by Tuesday while community partners help host after-school programs off-site.
