12 Dogs Taken In After Fire At North County Senior Living Community

ESCONDIDO, CA — Twelve dogs are receiving emergency care at San Diego Humane Society after a fire at a senior living community in Escondido prompted the evacuation of residents and their pets.

The organization's Humane Law Enforcement team was called shortly before 11 a.m. Wednesday to assist the Escondido Fire Department at the apartment complex at 1225 E. Grand Ave.

Two San Diego Humane Society veterinarians evaluated about 25 animals for possible smoke inhalation and other medical concerns. None required critical care, according to the organization.

Three adult dogs and eight puppies about 4 weeks old were rescued from one of the affected apartments. The dogs were passed through a window to firefighters waiting below, according to San Diego Humane Society. The owner was not home at the time.

The 11 dogs were taken to the organization's Escondido campus for emergency boarding and care.

A 12th dog found running loose near the fire was brought to the campus by a community member. San Diego Humane Society said one of its veterinarians recognized the dog from the scene, and officials believe it may have also come from the apartment complex.
