SAN DIEGO COUNTY, CA — San Diego County is mailing defaulted tax bills to more than 32,000 property owners who have unpaid 2025-26 taxes.
The San Diego County Treasurer-Tax Collector's Office is sending 32,573 bills for annual and supplemental property taxes that remained unpaid as of June 30, Treasurer-Tax Collector Larry Cohen announced.
Under state law, unpaid property taxes go into default after the tax roll closes June 30. Defaulted taxes are subject to a 1.5% penalty each month, or 18% annually, until the balance is paid. A $33 redemption fee is also added.
"A tax bill that goes into default doesn't just sit there — it gets more expensive every month," Cohen said. "If you still have an outstanding balance, I encourage you to take care of it as soon as possible."
Property owners with defaulted taxes may qualify for a five-year payment plan to pay delinquent taxes over time.
County officials also reminded property owners that supplemental property tax bills are separate from annual property tax bills and are not sent to mortgage lenders for payment.
Property owners can look up their tax account and make payments online at sdttc.com.
The county's 2026-27 secured property tax bills are expected to become available online in mid-to-late September. The first installment will be due Nov. 1 and becomes delinquent after Dec. 10.
