San Diego County's 4.9% Unemployment Rate Remains Steady In August

SAN DIEGO, CA — Unemployment in San Diego County stood at 4.9% in August, up slightly from 4.7% in July, the state Employment Development Department announced Friday.

The August figure was lower than August 2025, which was 5.1%, according to the EDD.

The county figures represent the Carlsbad, Chula Vista and San Diego metropolitan areas, according to the EDD.

Between July and August of this year, total nonfarm employment increased 2,400 jobs to 1,567,000. Agricultural jobs were unchanged. Year over year, total nonfarm employment increased by 10,900, while farm employment decreased by 300.

Private education and health services had the largest month-over gain in employment and recorded an increase of 1,600 jobs. Health care and social assistance sectors represented over 65% of the gains, with all subsectors strengthening employment. Private educational services jobs were up by 500.

Four other sectors added a combined total of 8,800 jobs, with the majority in leisure and hospitality, at 5,500.

Government jobs were down 4,200, with most of them in federal category, at 4,100.

Construction saw a job decline of 3,200.
