SAN DIEGO, CA — The San Diego Police Department will conduct a DUI checkpoint Saturday night at an undisclosed location in the city.
The checkpoint is scheduled from 10 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 17, to 2 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 18. Officers will look for signs of alcohol or drug impairment and check driver's licenses.
Police said checkpoint locations are selected based on previous DUI crashes and arrests. The goal is to deter impaired driving and improve public safety.
Authorities reminded drivers that prescription medications, over-the-counter drugs and marijuana can impair driving. Driving under the influence of marijuana is illegal in California.
A first-time DUI conviction can result in approximately $13,500 in fines and penalties, along with a suspended license, according to police.
The checkpoint is funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
