SAN DIEGO, CA — Authorities were searching for a 40-year-old San Diego man and his 12-year-old nephew, who have been reported missing after leaving on a fishing trip off Baja as Tropical Storm Rachel approached.

According to family members, the duo's boat departed from Campo La Poma in Ensenada around midday on Saturday, in the area south of San Felipe, near Bahía de San Luis Gonzaga.

Family members told NBC7 that the pair was only supposed to be gone for a few hours. However, the boat never returned.

Authorities including the Mexican Coast Guard were notified and have since begun their search effort.

According to NBC7, Ulloa's family members also hired a private plane to help with the search.

"During that time, the weather did turn bad, so we're not sure if we had engine problems or something more catastrophic," cousin Alister Barradell told NBC7.

Ulloa's family members took to social media to issue a plea for the duo's safe return.

"We are desperately hoping for news and asking anyone in the Baja community, especially fishermen, boat owners, local residents, and anyone who may have been out on the water in that area, to please keep an eye out," family members wrote. "If you have seen anything, heard anything, or have any information that could help locate them, please message me directly. Any information, no matter how small, could be important."
