SAN DIEGO, CA — A 9-year-old beluga whale rescued from Canada died unexpectedly at SeaWorld San Diego, the theme park announced Sunday.
Cyprus arrived at SeaWorld on Aug. 22 after being rescued from what park officials described as a "dire situation" in Canada.
The whale stopped eating two days before his death, prompting veterinarians to conduct a medical examination. An ultrasound showed his intestinal tract was not functioning normally, indicating a potentially life-threatening condition, according to SeaWorld.
Veterinarians provided treatment throughout the night, but Cyprus died despite their efforts.
SeaWorld said Cyprus had been doing well since his arrival, eating regularly, adjusting to his new environment and interacting with trainers, animal care staff and two other rescued belugas.
"Like many species, belugas can mask discomfort or underlying concerns that are not immediately visible," SeaWorld said in a statement.
A necropsy will be conducted to determine the cause of death, and the findings will be shared with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
"Like our colleagues at the other AZA-accredited facilities that rescued these belugas, we understood each animal would be navigating a significant transition and that their complete health picture, including conditions that may have developed over time, could only become clearer through ongoing assessment and care," SeaWorld said.
SeaWorld said the two other rescued belugas remain in stable health and are being closely monitored as they adjust to their new surroundings.
