SAN DIEGO, CA — Two children are among 11 people who have died from the flu this season in San Diego County as health officials report an early surge in cases and hospitalizations.
The children, a previously healthy 11-year-old and a 6-month-old with complex medical conditions, died this month, county officials announced Thursday.
So far this season, the county has recorded 11 flu-related deaths and 516 hospitalizations, compared with two deaths and 86 hospitalizations at the same point last year.
The county's latest respiratory virus surveillance report shows a sharp increase in positive flu tests, particularly among children ages 5 to 17.
"As a father myself, hearing about the deaths of two children is especially difficult and underscores the importance of prevention," County Public Health Officer Dr. Sayone Thihalolipavan said. "Flu vaccines are safe, effective and the best way to protect yourself and your loved ones from serious illness."
Health officials recommend annual flu vaccinations for everyone 6 months and older, particularly those with underlying health conditions. It takes about two weeks for the body to build protection after vaccination.
Flu vaccines are available at pharmacies, health clinics and other medical facilities throughout the county. County public health clinics also offer vaccinations for uninsured residents.
Appointments can be scheduled through the state's My Turn website.
Health officials also recommend frequent handwashing, avoiding close contact with sick people and staying home when sick to help prevent the spread of the virus.
