SAN DIEGO, CA — Twenty-one more cats have arrived in San Diego County from Hawaii as the San Diego Humane Society expands its relief efforts following Hurricane Lowell.
The cats arrived Tuesday evening, bringing the total number transferred from Kauai to 40, the organization announced Wednesday. The latest arrivals were taken to the Humane Society's San Diego and El Cajon shelters, where veterinary teams examined them Wednesday morning.
The transfers are intended to free up space at Kauai Humane Society for pets injured or displaced by the hurricane.
The latest group joins 19 cats brought to San Diego County in mid-October and housed at the Humane Society's Escondido and Oceanside shelters. Of those, 15 have been adopted, while four remain available.
The newly arrived cats will be available for adoption once they receive medical clearance. Adoptions are conducted in person on a first-come, first-served basis. Animals cannot be reserved by phone.
San Diego Humane Society is also encouraging residents to adopt, foster or donate to help care for the cats and approximately 1,650 other animals currently in its shelters.
