Armed Man Fatally Shot By San Diego Police After Hourslong Standoff

SAN DIEGO, CA — A man was fatally shot by police after emerging from a San Diego home with a gun following an hourslong standoff, authorities said Wednesday.

San Diego Police Department officers responded around 4:40 p.m. Tuesday to a check-the-welfare call in the 2700 block of Nipoma Street that was later upgraded to a report of a residential burglary in progress, according to the San Diego County Sheriff's Office.

Officers spoke with the homeowner, who said firearms were inside the residence and that no one had permission to be there. A San Diego Police SWAT team responded and attempted to establish contact with the person inside.

During the standoff, officers heard gunshots coming from inside the home, sheriff's officials said.

A man holding a firearm walked out the front door at about 9:20 p.m. Officers opened fire and struck the man. He was pronounced dead at the scene around 9:40 p.m.

No officers were injured.

The Sheriff's Office Homicide Unit is investigating the shooting. The San Diego Police Department will also conduct an internal administrative review.

The man's identity and the names of the officers involved were not released.
