Car Rams Camp Pendleton Gate Before Bursting Into Flames: Reports

CAMP PENDLETON, CA — A car rammed the main gate at California's Camp Pendleton on Friday night in an attempt to gain unauthorized access to the base, according to officials and a report.

Camp Pendleton officials confirmed on Twitter that there "was an attempt to gain unauthorized access to the installation" around 6:30 p.m.

The incident caused a temporary closure of the site's main gate, officials said. During the closure, visitors were told to use the Del Mar Gate.

The main gate reopened around 9 p.m., according to officials.

A report by CBS Los Angeles said a person attempted to ram the gate with their car. Meanwhile, video on social media reportedly shows the car in flames with significant damage to its front end.

"The MCB Camp Pendleton Provost Marshall Office deployed the final denial barriers and disabled the vehicle," Camp Pendleton officials tweeted.

The driver of the car was not identified. It's unclear how many people were in the car and what led to the incident.
