Coast Guard Intercepts 20 Suspected Migrants Off San Diego Coast

One individual claimed Sudanese nationality and 19 claimed Mexican nationality​, officials said.

SAN DIEGO, CA — The U.S. Coast Guard stopped 20 people suspected of entering the country illegally about 8 miles west of Sunset Cliffs, authorities said.

Crew members aboard the Coast Guard Cutter Forrest Rednour spotted an 18-foot panga-style vessel entering U.S. waters around 8:30 p.m. Sunday and deployed a boarding team to intercept it, according to the Coast Guard.

The boarding team stopped the vessel and identified 20 suspected undocumented migrants on board. One individual claimed Sudanese nationality and 19 claimed Mexican nationality, officials said.

A boat crew from Coast Guard Station San Diego transported the vessel and all 20 people to Department of Homeland Security personnel at Ballast Point for further processing, according to the Coast Guard.
