Crowbar-Wielding Burglar Attacks, Injures Man In Clairemont Mesa

SAN DIEGO — A Poway man who allegedly bludgeoned a 72-year-old Clairemont Mesa resident with a crowbar Monday morning – leaving him with life- threatening injuries – after being caught trying to break into the victim's garage was arrested about six hours later.

The victim drove to his home in the 5000 block of Kesling Street following an outing and saw an unidentified heavyset intruder in ski goggles trying to force entry with the crowbar about 9:30 a.m., according to San Diego police.

When the victim got out of his minivan and confronted him, the burglar attacked the resident with the tool, then drove off in the victim's 2001 Toyota Sienna, Lt. Martha Sainz said.

Medics took the victim, whose name was withheld, to a hospital for treatment of severe head trauma.

About 3:30 p.m., officers arrested the suspected assailant, identified as 33-year-old Daniel Dubois, in the 12500 block of Poway Road, Sainz said. Sainz declined to disclose how investigators identified Dubois as the alleged perpetrator or provide further details on the arrest.

The victim's minivan was recovered, Sainz said.
