SAN DIEGO, CA — A DUI and driver's license checkpoint is scheduled this weekend in an unincorporated area of San Diego.

The checkpoint is set from 8 p.m. Friday to 2 a.m. Saturday at an undisclosed location in the San Diego area, according to the California Highway Patrol. During the checkpoint, officers will look for signs that drivers are under the influence of alcohol or drugs and check for proper licensing.

"The deterrent effect of DUI checkpoints is a proven resource in reducing the number of persons killed and injured in alcohol or drug involved crashes," a news release from the CHP said. "Research shows that crashes involving an impaired driver can be reduced by up to 20% when well-publicized DUI checkpoints and proactive DUI patrols are conducted routinely. Checkpoints serve three purposes; deterrence, removal of drunk drivers from the road, and public education."
