SAN DIEGO, CA – Earl of Sandwich, a new restaurant co-founded by a direct descendant of the actual "Earl of Sandwich," is open at 690 1st Ave. in downtown San Diego.

The "Earl" franchise, owned and operated by San Diego local Alan Nguyen, serves ups an assortment of hot, made-to-order sandwiches with artisan bread, meats, cheese and "horseradish for a take on classic British Sunday roasts," along with salads, wraps and desserts.

“It’s an honor to bring the first Earl of Sandwich to San Diego,” Nguyen said. "Earl of Sandwich has incredible ingredients, while letting guests create their perfect sandwich.”

The Earl of Sandwich concept dates to John Montagu, the 4th Earl of Sandwich, a British nobleman and avid gambler who, not wanting to leave the card table to eat, asked for a serving of roast beef to be placed between two slices of bread so he could eat with his hands, according to company officials.

Thus, the sandwich was born in 1762! Some 242 years later, Lord John Montagu, the 11th Earl of Sandwich and direct descendant of the inventor of the sandwich, partnered with Robert Earl, founder and CEO of Planet Hollywood®, to reclaim and reinvent "the greatest of all quick food," management said.
