Fatal Fall Of Woman, Child At Petco Park Is 'Suspicious'

Investigators on Monday were still trying to determine what caused a 40-year-old woman and her 2-year-old son to fall to their death.

SAN DIEGO, CA — Police on Monday were investigating the deaths of a 40-year-old San Diego woman and her 2-year-old child. The mother and son fell to their death from Petco Park's third floor on Sunday in an accident that police described as "suspicious."

The pair fell from a concourse that was the equivalent of six stories high just minutes before the game was set to begin just before 4 p.m.

"We are deeply saddened by the loss of life at Petco Park last evening," the Padres said in a statement Sunday. "Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of those involved. We will continue to refrain from comment on the nature of the incident as it is an ongoing investigation by the San Diego Police Department."

The bodies of the two San Diego residents were found on the sidewalk, where officers attempted life saving measures. They were both pronounced dead at the scene.

"Out an abundance of caution," the San Diego Police Homicide unit was called to the scene, Lt. Andra Brown said, adding that the two were at a dining/concession area on the concourse level before the fall.

Shane Harris, president of People's Association of Justice Advocates and a San Diego civic leader, said he planned to stop by Tony Gwynn Way and L Street at 6:30 p.m. Sunday to pay his respects to the mother and child, and to light a candles and lay flowers near the spot where the two died.

"This is deeply saddening, troubling and painful not just for the family but San Diegans as a whole," Harris said. "We are all praying for the family of this mother and her child especially at such a difficult time."
