SAN DIEGO, CA — Adoption fees have been waved for adult dogs through the end of 2022, the San Diego Humane Society announced Tuesday, all thanks to a $10,000 donation from local animal lover Randy Spicer.

It has been an "unprecedented year" at the shelter, which is currently at capacity for its dog population, according to a spokesperson for the Humane Society. Many incoming stray animals still have not been reclaimed by their owners and there are approximately 280 adult dogs among the 700 animals available for donation in San Diego.

"Each dog deserves a cozy bed, tasty treats and people to love shower them with love," a spokesperson for the shelter wrote on social media.

The shelters in San Diego are "at capacity for dog populations. They are asking for support as stray animals and those with nowhere left to turn continue to enter their care.

Gary Weitzman, president and CEO of the humane society spoke on the donation and the push for adult dog adoption.

"This donation to support adoptions could not have come at a better time," Weitzman said. "By waiving fees, we are hoping to get these dogs into new homes for the holidays."

Those who adopt from SDHS get pets who are spayed/neutered and vaccinated, have been medically assessed and cared for, and also receive training advice and educational information from the organization for the life of the animal.

The San Diego Humane Society is open for walk-in adoptions Tuesday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at its campuses in Escondido, El Cajon, Oceanside and San Diego.
