Free Courtyard Concerts Return For Spring To The Conrad In La Jolla

Local jazz & classical artists are scheduled April to June at The Conrad Prebys Performing Arts Center.

LA JOLLA, CA — Free courtyard concerts return from April to June — featuring local jazz and classical music stars — to The Conrad in La Jolla.

Launched last year, the 2023 concert series kicks off its spring season in the Wu Tsai QRT.yrd Friday, April 7, from 4:30 p.m.-5:30 p.m. as part of the "Traffic Jam" shows.

The opening concert stars the Lori Bell Quartet, starring flutist Lori Bell and an all-women jazz quartet including pianist Melonie Grinnell, bassist Evona Wascinski and percussionist Monette Marino.

"Midday Classics" — a lunchtime version from 12 p.m. to 1:30 p.m.— offers classical music beginning Tuesday, May 23 with Westwind Brass. Bring your lunch and enjoy live music.

• In May, the concerts begin with a volunteer recruitment event for high schoolers and university students. La Jolla Music Society is opening up opportunities for students with a passion for music, dance, and volunteering to join as ushers at upcoming performances this summer and next season.
• On Wednesday, June 21, La Jolla Music Society will partner with Monarch Cottage and the Salk Institute to present a lecture on “Engaging the Aging Brain through Music.” Registration will be required for the lecture, which will take place at The Conrad in The JAI. A concert will follow in the courtyard by the piano trio, Aviara Trio.

"With the opening of The Conrad in 2019, La Jolla Music Society gained an amazing new resource that can help us build and strengthen our connection to the community,” said Allison Boles, director of learning and engagement.

“With this new Wu Tsai QRT.yrd concert series, launched last year, we want all people to feel welcome and to feel a sense of belonging at The Conrad," Boles added. "I hope the free concerts featuring talented local musicians will serve as a point of entry for many individuals and help us build excitement and engagement at The Conrad.”
