Grammy-Winning Violinist Johnny Gandelsman Next Up In Art Of ÉLan's 15th Season

The Art of Élan’s 15th season – titled “Regeneration,” continues Sunday as Grammy Award-winning violinist and producer Johnny Gandelsman performs at Balboa Park and in La Jolla.

First up, on Sunday, he’ll take the stage at 7 p.m. Sunday at the Institute of Contemporary Art Central in the park, performing “This is America,” an hour of new music for solo violin featuring a diverse lineup, including Adeliia Faizullina, Christina Courtin and Rhiannon Giddens.
ICA guests also may arrive early to view an exhibition, “Gabriel Rico: Unity in Variety,” the first solo show in California by the contemporary Mexican conceptualist artist.

Gandelsman will follow with a show at the JAI cabaret space in the Conrad Prebys Performing Arts Center at 7 p.m. Monday. He will explore the complete suites for unaccompanied cello by J.S. Bach, but on the violin.
Tickets for the ICA show start at $35, with the JAI show starting at $20.
Concerts through the spring, at varying venues, include:
- March 8 – “Evolution,” folk music from around the world, San Diego Museum of Art.
- April 21 – Kontras Quartet, Institute of Contemporary Art North.
- May 17 – “For the Earth,” with the Hausmann Quartet, San Diego Museum of Art.
- June 4 – “Young Artists in Harmony,” featuring new works from young composers, ARTS venue, National City.
Venue information is forthcoming for two other concerts, set for April 13-14, featuring violinists and dancers with the American Modern Opera Company.
