Man Arrested After Attempted Carjacking In San Diego

A 19-year-old man was behind bars Wednesday after he attempted to steal a car at gunpoint in the Redwood Village neighborhood.

SAN DIEGO, CA – A 19-year-old man was behind bars Wednesday after he attempted to steal a car at gunpoint in the Redwood Village neighborhood but was foiled when the victim ran away without giving him the keys, police said.

A man was loading groceries into his car at about 10:20 p.m. Tuesday in the 5900 block of University Avenue when a man wearing all black clothing and a black mask ran up and pointed a handgun at him, San Diego police Sgt. Joe Ruvido said.

The suspect demanded the man's car keys, but the victim shut the car door and ran away, Ruvido said.

The suspect got into the victim's car, but did not have the keys to start the car, Ruvido said. He got out of the car and fled on foot after seeing a security guard in the area.

Officers responded to the scene, located the suspect nearby and took the him into custody, Ruvido said.

The suspect, 19-year-old Demontauz Daylon Gray Jr., was booked into San Diego Central Jail on suspicion of attempted carjacking, according to jail records. He was being held without bail pending his arraignment, scheduled for Friday afternoon.
