Man Fatally Shot In Chollas Creek-Area Neighborhood

Investigators determined that there were other people in the area at the time of the homicide.

SAN DIEGO, CA — A 35-year-old man was fatally shot by an unknown assailant over the weekend in a Chollas Creek-area neighborhood, authorities reported Monday.

Patrol officers responding to reports of gunfire found the victim lying in the roadway in the 3700 block of Altadena Avenue about 7:30 p.m. Sunday, suffering from at least one gunshot wound to his upper body, according to the San Diego Police Department.

Paramedics took the man to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly after 8 p.m., SDPD Lt. Steve Shebloski said. The victim's name has been withheld pending family notification.

The circumstances that led to the deadly shooting remained unclear Monday, according to police.

"However, detectives have learned the victim may have had a brief verbal confrontation with at least one other (man) in the area immediately preceding the shooting," Shebloski said.

Investigators determined that there were other people in the area at the time of the homicide.

"Detectives are currently in the process of interviewing those witnesses, gathering physical evidence from the crime scene and checking the area for any surveillance video footage," the lieutenant said. "At this time, the only description of the (shooter) is a Hispanic or white male, late teens to early 20s ... wearing dark clothing. (He) may have fled the area in a dark- colored vehicle."
