Man Found Dead Off Coast Of La Jolla Shores ID'd

SAN DIEGO, CA — Authorities Thursday publicly identified a man who was found dead last weekend in the ocean off the coast of La Jolla Shores.

William Cunningham Jr., 65, of San Diego was found dead Saturday morning about 150 yards offshore, according to the San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office. Two surfers found his body and alerted San Diego lifeguards.

"Lifeguards responded to the location and extricated the decedent from the water prior to requesting paramedic assistance," the Medical Examiner's Office said. "Responding paramedics contacted the decedent and confirmed death without medical intervention due to obvious postmortem changes."

An autopsy determined that Cunningham died of blunt-force trauma and drowning, according to the Medical Examiner's Office said.
