Man Pleads Not Guilty To Murder, Assault, In Toddler's Death

SAN DIEGO, CA — A man accused of causing fatal injuries to his girlfriend's toddler son in the Bay Terraces neighborhood pleaded not guilty Thursday to charges of murder and assault on a child causing death.

McArvin Caringal-Sanchez, 20, is accused of fatally injuring the unidentified boy, who was nearly 2 years old at the time of his death.

Police were called Monday afternoon to a home on Morton Way for a call of a child who was not breathing. The boy was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

According to SDPD Lt. Jud Campbell, the child was found to have "serious traumatic internal injuries that were indicative of child abuse." The investigation led to Caringal-Sanchez's arrest, though police and prosecutors have not disclosed further details regarding the allegations against the defendant.

He remains in custody without bail following Thursday's arraignment.
