Man Whose Body Was Found Floating Off Mission Beach ID'd
Authorities publicly identified a 37-year-old Egyptian citizen found dead under potentially suspicious circumstances last week in the ocean.

SAN DIEGO, CA – Authorities Monday publicly identified a 37-year-old Egyptian citizen found dead under potentially suspicious circumstances last week in the ocean off the coast of Mission Beach.
The body of Abdelkader Elshayeb was floating about 2 1/2 miles from shore when a fisherman on a boat spotted it shortly before 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, according to police. City lifeguards retrieved the body and brought it to their main dock off Quivira Court on Mission Bay.
Elshayeb was dressed only in surfer-style shorts, and his body bore no obvious signs of traumatic injuries, Lt. Anthony Dupree said. A potentially suspicious factor in the case, however, was a chain wrapped around the dead man's waist, though it might have been used simply as a belt or style accessory, the lieutenant said.

Homicide detectives were called in to investigate the fatality "out of an abundance of caution," Dupree said.
A ruling on the cause of Elshayeb's death remains on hold pending completion of postmortem exams.
