SAN DIEGO, CA — McDonald's is bringing back its Fried Apple Pie to participating restaurants in San Diego and nationwide beginning June 23 for a limited time.

The dessert, available all day while supplies last, features apples grown in the U.S. wrapped in a fried, flaky crust.

The chain said the returning menu item revives a recipe that first appeared at McDonald's restaurants in the 1960s and remained a staple through the early 1990s.

The Fried Apple Pie was created by East Tennessee McDonald's owner-operator Litton Cochran, whose family recipe became popular before expanding nationwide, according to the company.

McDonald's said the comeback coincides with celebrations leading up to the nation's 250th birthday.

"There are certain things that just take you back — and the Fried Apple Pie is one of them. It's something that people love and remember from growing up," McDonald's owner-operator Eric Cochran said in a statement.

"When Ray Kroc was trying to come up with a dessert for McDonald's, my grandad, Litton Cochran, suggested a Fried Apple Pie as a classic that people would love. My grandmom, Jo Cochran, spent months perfecting the recipe," Cochran said. "Bringing the Fried Apple Pie back for fans this summer to celebrate America's 250th just feels right."

The fried apple hand pie will be available at participating McDonald's restaurants and through the McDonald's app starting June 23 while supplies last.
