Missing Dog Reunited With San Diego Family Nearly 3 Years Later

SAN DIEGO, CA — A Maltipoo missing for nearly three years was reunited with his family this week after San Diego Humane Society officers found the dog and identified him through his microchip.

Humane Law Enforcement officers responded Tuesday night to a report of an abandoned dog at the Jewish Family Service Safe Sleeping site on Kincaid Road, according to San Diego Humane Society.

Officers brought the dog in for care and scanned him for a microchip, which identified him as Colby, a dog reported missing Sept. 27, 2023.

Officers confirmed the owner's contact information and reached Colby's family around 9:30 p.m. His owner, Cindy, woke her children to tell them their dog had been found, according to the organization.

Colby was found with fleas, matted fur and a possible skin infection. San Diego Humane Society's medical team groomed and bathed him and provided vaccinations and a wellness exam.

Colby was reunited Wednesday afternoon with Cindy and her son Gregory. The family also opted to have Colby neutered before taking him home Thursday.

The Humane Society said the case highlights the importance of microchipping pets, keeping contact information associated with microchips current and filing a missing pet report with local shelters.
