5 Injured, 5 Missing, 1 Rescued In Helicopter Crash Off SD Coast

One crew member was rescued, five were injured and five remained missing after a military helicopter crashed off the coast of San Diego.

SAN DIEGO, CA — One crew member was rescued, five were injured and five others remained missing Wednesday after a military helicopter crashed off the coast of San Diego.

The MH-60S helicopter was conducting routine flight operations at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday when it crashed off the deck of San Diego-based USS Abraham Lincoln about 60 nautical miles off the coast, according to the U.S. Navy.

"The aircraft, from Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron (HSC) 8, was operating on deck before crashing into the sea," the U.S. Third Fleet said in a news release.

One crew member was rescued Tuesday and taken ashore, where he was listed in stable condition, the Third Fleet public affairs office said.

Five sailors aboard the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier were injured in the incident, the public affairs office said. Three of the sailors suffered minor injuries and were treated on the ship, while the other two sailors were taken ashore for treatment. They were all listed in stable condition.

Navy and Coast Guard ships and aircraft were still searching for the missing crew members as of late Wednesday morning.

The incident remained under investigation.
