Over 62K Notices Sent Out For Unpaid Property Taxes In San Diego County

SAN DIEGO, CA — More than 62,000 San Diego County property owners who have not fully paid their 2025-26 property taxes still have time to avoid additional penalties if payments are made by June 30, county officials said.

San Diego County Treasurer-Tax Collector Larry Cohen said his office will send 62,623 notices this week to taxpayers with unpaid balances.

Beginning July 1, unpaid tax bills will go into default and incur an additional $33 redemption fee plus monthly penalties of 1.5%, according to the county. Officials said the penalties can add up to 18% annually.

Property taxes are due in two installments each year, in December and April. Late installments already carry a 10% penalty, plus a $10 fee if the second installment is late.

The San Diego County Treasurer-Tax Collector's Office said more than $270 million in late property taxes remains unpaid. So far, the county has collected 98.55% of first-installment payments and 95.96% of second-installment payments, for an overall collection rate of 97.25%.

County officials encouraged taxpayers to pay online using the free e-check option at sdttc.com. Under California law, properties that remain in default for five years may be sold at a tax sale.
