Man Loses Hand, Part Of Arm In San Diego Train Crash

SAN DIEGO, CA – A 43-year-old man lost a hand and part of an arm early Thursday when he was struck by a freight train in the Marina district near the Gaslamp Quarter in downtown San Diego.

Emergency personnel were summoned around 3:25 a.m. to the freight rails that run parallel to West Harbor Drive near the San Diego Convention Center. Investigators from the sheriff's Transit Enforcement Unit said a BNSF Railway Co. train was southbound when it struck the unidentified victim, who sustained "severe but non-life-threatening injuries," according to Deputy Brian Abraham.

Video footage aired by 10 News showed firefighters and paramedics treating the victim, whose right arm appeared to be severed a little below the elbow. He was conscious and walking with the support of emergency crews before being placed on a stretcher, loaded into an ambulance and taken to UCSD Medical Center in Hillcrest.

The television station reported that police later discovered the man's severed limb, which was placed in a bag and sent to the hospital.
