Police To Conduct DUI Patrols Friday In North County

ESCONDIDO, CA — Escondido police will increase patrols Friday evening to look for drivers suspected of being under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Officers will conduct DUI patrols from 4 p.m. Friday to 1 a.m. Saturday, according to the Escondido Police Department.

"Impaired driving is preventable," Police Chief Ken Plunkett said. "It's a choice. If you've been drinking or taken drugs that impair, make the right choice by finding a sober driver or alternate transportation to take you places."

Police reminded drivers that impairment can be caused by substances other than alcohol, including some prescription and over-the-counter medications. Although recreational and medicinal marijuana are legal in California, driving while impaired by marijuana is illegal.

A first-time DUI conviction can cost a driver an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties and result in a suspended license, police said.

The patrols are funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
