Armed Woman Shot By Police After Reported Stabbing In San Diego: Sheriff's Office

SAN DIEGO, CA — The San Diego County Sheriff's Homicide Unit was investigating an officer-involved shooting involving a woman accused of stabbing a man Wednesday afternoon in the East Village neighborhood of San Diego.

Officers with the San Diego Police Department responded around 5 p.m. to a report of an assault with a deadly weapon at 16th Street and Island Avenue, where callers reported a woman actively stabbing a man.

When officers arrived, they ordered the suspect to drop the object she was holding, according to the San Diego County Sheriff's Office. The woman instead advanced toward the officers, and one officer fired multiple rounds, striking the suspect. She was also Tased during the incident.

Officers provided medical aid and requested paramedics. The suspect was taken to a hospital, where she was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

No officers were injured, and the victim of the assault did not sustain any injuries, officials said.

The woman is expected to be booked on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and making criminal threats.

Per the Countywide Memorandum of Understanding, the San Diego County Sheriff's Office Homicide Unit was called to the scene to conduct the officer-involved shooting investigation. Detectives were gathering evidence, interviewing witnesses, and examining the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

Once the investigation is completed, the case will be reviewed by the San Diego County District Attorney's Office to determine whether the officer bears any criminal liability. Police will also conduct an internal administrative review.
