Record Number Of Dogs At San Diego Humane Society Grows With New Mass Surrenders

SAN DIEGO, CA — San Diego Humane Society has taken in more than 50 surrendered Yorkies and huskies from two overwhelmed owners, adding to a record-breaking dog population that has left the organization caring for nearly 800 canines.

The organization is coordinating the surrender of about 25 to 30 Yorkshire terriers and more than 25 huskies. The first group of dogs arrived July 28, with eight Yorkies taken to the Escondido campus, 10 huskies to the San Diego campus and three huskies to the El Cajon campus.

The Yorkies are being treated for severe flea infestations and will receive grooming and veterinary exams before becoming available for adoption. Many of the huskies are fearful and will require behavioral support.

The latest intakes come as July is on track to become the 11th consecutive month in which San Diego Humane Society has set a record for the average number of adult dogs in its care. Through July 27, the organization averaged 663 adult dogs each day, surpassing the previous July record of 612 set in 2024. Including puppies, the shelter is caring for 792 dogs.

Overall, San Diego Humane Society has about 1,950 animals in its care, including 874 available for adoption. Those include 374 adult dogs, 27 puppies, 160 adult cats, 132 kittens, 18 rabbits, 72 guinea pigs and 33 farm animals.

To help free up space, adoption fees for all animals except horses will be reduced by 50% throughout August as part of the national Clear the Shelters campaign. The promotion will conclude with a fee-waived adoption day on Aug. 29.

San Diego Humane Society is open for walk-in adoptions from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday at its campuses in El Cajon, Escondido, Oceanside and San Diego.
