UPDATE NO. 2; 10:38 a.m. Pacific Time: A bomb threat at Naval Base San Diego Thursday morning prompted base officials to evacuate the pier — the focus of the threat — and a ship docked nearby, but nothing hazardous was found during a subsequent search.
Someone at the base commonly known as 32nd Street reported finding the written threat that referenced the vicinity of Pier 7 shortly before 9 a.m., according to Navy spokesman Brian O'Rourke. The base was not placed on lockdown, he said.
Authorities evacuated the pier and the USS Essex, which was docked at the time, but lifted the order when a search turned up nothing hazardous, O'Rourke said. Naval Base San Diego has since returned to normal operations.
