Rockslide Blocks SR-78 East Of Wynola: Caltrans

After heavy rain, a rockslide led to a closure that is affecting the SR-78 between Wynola and Julian, CalTrans says.

JULIAN, CA —Caltrans announced a road closure due to a rockslide covering lanes between Wynola and Julian, Wednesday.

At noon, Caltrans officials closed State Route 78 between Wynola Road in Julian and the bottom of Banner Grade in the Shelter Valley area due to a rockslide, Caltrans reported over Twitter.

Caltrans shared photos of a mudslide that closed lanes on SR-78 Wednesday.

Elsewhere, Caltrans reported that roads were slushy and shoulders were covered in snow.

"Caltrans plows are clearing up for safe travel, and rain is falling," a Caltrans spokesperson said over Twitter. "Please avoid unnecessary travel and check road conditions."

There was no estimate given for reopening the roadway, however lanes remained shuttered as of 1 p.m.
