San Diego Among 'Most Dangerous' Cities For Hit-And-Runs: Report

SAN DIEGO, CA — San Diego is one of the most dangerous cities for hit-and-run crashes, according to a new report.
San Diego ranked as the eighth-deadliest city in the country for hit-and-runs, according to research conducted by personal injury law firm Anidjar & Levine. Hit-and-runs accounted for 10.31% of all fatal road crashes recorded in the city from 2017 to 2021.
San Diego isn't the only dangerous city for hit-and-runs in the state. In fact, the Golden State is home to eight of the top 10 most dangerous cities, the study found.

"Cities in California are the most treacherous spots for fatal hit-and-runs in the entire country," a spokesperson from Anidjar & Levine said. "While drivers, pedestrians, cyclists and more can enjoy the fantastic hot weather and picturesque environments in the state, all road users must be aware of their surroundings, road signs, nearby vehicles and lanes."
Fresno topped the study as the most dangerous city in America for hit-and-runs, with 14.55% of all fatal traffic accidents involving a hit-and-run.

There were about 275 fatal crashes in the city between 2017 and 2021, according to the report. Of those crashes, 40 involved a hit-and-run.
San Jose ranked as the second-most dangerous city, where hit-and-runs accounted for 13.98% of all fatal road crashes recorded in the city from 2017 to 2021.
Santa Ana ranked third, San Bernardino ranked fourth, and Stockton ranked as the fifth-deadliest city in the country for hit-and-runs. Los Angeles placed sixth on the study, followed by Sacramento in seventh.
"This data highlights the importance of exercising extreme caution when driving or near a road," the spokesperson said. "If you are involved in a hit-and-run, ensure everyone is safe, call the authorities to file a report, take notes of the incident to help support your case, and then contact your insurance company."
The firm studied data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration on the number of deadly traffic incidents between 2017 and 2021, breaking them down by hit-and-run outcome. Cities with less than 100 total fatalities were excluded from the analysis. The final ranking revealed which cities had the highest percentage of fatal incidents involving a hit-and-run.
