San Diego Honors National Military Appreciation Month
Join Us in Supporting Our Heroes: Fundraiser to Benefit Veterans Navigation Center
San Diego, CA — Each May, communities across the United States observe National Military Appreciation Month—a time to recognize and honor the service, sacrifice, and strength of our nation’s military members and their families. In San Diego, a city deeply connected to the military, the month holds particular meaning.
Established by Congress in 1999, National Military Appreciation Month is filled with significant observances, including Loyalty Day (May 1), Military Spouse Appreciation Day, Armed Forces Day, and Memorial Day. These moments offer opportunities not just for celebration, but for reflection on the vital role service members play in protecting our freedoms.
With one of the largest concentrations of active duty and veteran populations in the country, San Diego has long been a hub for military excellence and community support. Local institutions, schools, civic groups, and families participate in ceremonies, flag displays, and volunteer events throughout the month to honor those who serve.
It’s also a time to remember that military service extends beyond the individual. Spouses, children, and extended families of service members all make sacrifices that often go unrecognized. National Military Appreciation Month encourages communities to acknowledge these contributions and offer tangible support.
“San Diego has always stood as a model of military appreciation,” said Scott H. Silverman, CEO of the San Diego-based Veterans Navigation Center. “From our local businesses to our schools and neighborhoods, the community consistently shows up for those who’ve served.”
The month also serves as a reminder of the challenges many veterans face after their service ends. Transitioning to civilian life can come with obstacles—whether it’s navigating benefits, finding housing, or securing meaningful employment. That’s why organizations like the Veterans Navigation Center exist: to ensure no veteran is left behind.
To help sustain its support services, the Veterans Navigation Center is holding a fundraiser throughout the month of May. Donations will directly benefit local veterans and their families as they work toward stable, healthy civilian lives. Contributions can be made securely at VeteransNavigationCenter.org or by calling 858-866-6977.
For San Diegans, National Military Appreciation Month is more than a national observance—it’s a hometown tradition. This May, residents are encouraged to participate in local events, fly the flag, thank a veteran, and support organizations that are making a difference every day.
