San Diego Humane Society Launches Day Of Giving Fundraiser As Shelters Face Overcrowding

SAN DIEGO, CA — San Diego Humane Society is asking community members to support its annual Give Humane: Day of Giving fundraiser as the organization faces overcrowded shelters and cares for animals rescued from a large-scale neglect case in Julian.

The fundraiser, scheduled for June 25, aims to raise $1 million for animal care programs. Donations made through June 25 will be matched, dollar for dollar, up to $50,000 through a gift from Charles and Carol Baum, according to the organization.

San Diego Humane Society officials said demand for services has increased as shelters operate beyond capacity and staff care for animals rescued from the Julian property.

"Between the overflow of animals in our care and the specialized needs of the Julian rescue survivors, our resources are stretched to the limit," Executive Vice President Brian Daugherty said in a statement. "Give Humane is more than a fundraiser this year, it is a lifeline that ensures we never have to turn our backs on animals in need."

Funds raised will support care for shelter pets and wildlife, including medical treatment for animals with complex health needs. The organization highlighted the case of Dewey, a dog treated for an ear infection and spinal abnormalities before being adopted.

The Give Humane fundraiser is in its 11th year. Donations can be made at GiveHumaneSD.org.
