San Diego Man Drowns In Newport Beach After Trying To Retrieve Phone

The 32-year-old man drowned in Newport Harbor over the weekend while trying to retrieve a fallen cell phone, authorities said.

SAN DIEGO, CA — A San Diego man drowned in Newport Harbor after trying to retrieve a cell phone that fell into the water over the weekend, the Orange County Register reported.

32-year-old Mathew Morrow was with family and friends on Lido Isle, which is a manmade island in the middle of the harbor on Sunday afternoon, when someone in the group dropped the phone authorities said.

Morrow attempted to retrieve the phone by jumping in the water, but never came back up, Orange County sheriff's spokesman Sgt. Scott Steinle said.

Authorities were called to the area at roughly 4:40 p.m., Steinle told the OC Register. According to the report, Newport Beach lifeguards found Morrow's body in the water just before 5:15 p.m.

Morrow was pronounced dead on the dock, Steinle said.
