San Diego Smartphone Filmmaking Opportunity

Full feature length films and short films shot with smartphones can now submit to the 2021 International Mobile Film Festival in San Diego

If you've ever said, "This feels like a movie." Or, "I can see that as a movie." We got you. A long time ago on this planet, we launched the idea that everyone with the desire to, should have the opportunity to make a movie. So we launched the International Mobile Film Festival in San Diego for only movies shot using the camera on your mobile phone, the most accessible camera on earth.

The 2021 edition of IMFF marks the 10th year anniversary since we finally put mobile films, shot with only cellphones, on a big screen in a live venue complete with a red carpet awards ceremony, Q&A panels, a mobile filmmaking workshop, and much more. San Diego has been the home to this local event since 2009. It's brought people from as far as New Zealand and Australia, Indonesia, Europe and Latin America together with people from the U.S. and San Diego to our city.

This year, #MFF2021SanDiego has raised the bar for feature filmmakers using smartphones to shoot their movies by extending the limit of time for feature films from 90 minutes to 120 minutes.

IMFF has also been inspired by Scotland based filmmaker and choreographer Jamiel Laurence, Second Place winner of the short film competition last year #MFF2020SanDiego. Jamiel's been shooting unique dance themed films using iPhones. Thanks to Jamiel, the newest, "Screendance" short film category is a new challenge for smartphone mobile filmmakers.

The youth film category features youth and families. It just so happens to be, that the inaugural film festival in 2012 included a film from a north San Diego family made by a Mom. Mom and kids shared their film festival screening together, including the red carpet. This year, Third Place winners of IMFF 2020's short film competition were a family that made a beautiful musical short film featuring the mother and young daughter, made by the father, Oleg Loparev. If your family is spending a lot of time together in 2020...this may be a way to bond through creativity and storytelling. Bet you have the camera nearby...
