SAN DIEGO, CA — San Diego Zoo Safari Park is celebrating World Echidna Day for the first time Friday.
The park will host keeper chats at Zuest Station near the tree kangaroo habitat. The chats will feature the Safari Park's ambassador echidnas.
Echidnas are monotremes, which are egg-laying mammals equipped with a beak, spines and strong paddle-like feet. They are one of two species, the other being platypus.

The keeper chats will take place at 10 a.m., 11 a.m., noon and 1 p.m. Friday, where staff members will talk more about this species and conservation efforts in Papua New Guinea. The park's echidnas are the New Guinea subspecies.
