SeaWorld San Diego Welcomes Dolphin Calf, Sea Lion Pup

SAN DIEGO, CA — SeaWorld San Diego is celebrating the births of a bottlenose dolphin calf and a California sea lion pup, the park announced.

The female dolphin calf was born June 21 to mother, Sofi, and is being cared for alongside her grandmother, Sandy. Guests can see the three generations of dolphins together at Dolphin Stadium as the calf learns and grows.

The female California sea lion pup was born June 15 to first-time mother, Phoenix. The pup is currently being cared for behind the scenes and is expected to make her public debut in the coming months.

SeaWorld officials said the births provide opportunities for its animal care teams to study marine mammal development, behavior and health, which can help inform rescue and rehabilitation efforts.

"These births are an extraordinary testament to the dedication and expertise of our animal care and veterinary teams," Eric Otjen, vice president of zoological operations at SeaWorld San Diego, said in a statement.

"Every new calf and pup deepens our understanding of these incredible species and contributes to the knowledge that helps protect marine mammals both in our care and in the wild," Otjen said. "Seeing three generations of dolphins together and supporting a first-time sea lion mother through this important milestone are truly special moments."

SeaWorld said its rescue program has helped more than 43,000 sick, injured and orphaned animals. The park will announce names for the new dolphin and sea lion in the coming weeks.
