Suspected DUI Driver Arrested After Pursuit Ends In Crash In San Diego

A pursuit that started in North County ended when the suspected DUI driver crashed into several vehicles in San Diego, authorities said.

SAN DIEGO, CA — A man suspected of driving under the influence was arrested after he led deputies on a pursuit and crashed into several vehicles, authorities said Thursday.

Shortly after 10 p.m. Wednesday, a deputy from the North Coastal Sheriff's Station saw a speeding black Ford 150 and believed the driver was possibly driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, according to the San Diego County Sheriff's Department.

"The deputy initiated a traffic enforcement stop but the driver failed to yield, and a traffic pursuit ensued," police Sgt. Scott Faiferlick said. "The deputy pursued the truck on surface streets and onto the eastbound 52 freeway. During the pursuit, the driver committed several other traffic violations."

The driver crashed into several vehicles at the intersection of Convoy Street and Balboa Avenue in the San Diego, Faiferlick said. Two people were taken to a hospital to be evaluated for minor injuries. The others were evaluated at the scene and not injured.

The driver and only occupant of the truck, Samuel Laguna, 31, was arrested on suspicion of DUI causing injury and evading police, Faiferlick said. He was taken to a hospital for evaluation before he was booked into jail.

Sheriff's deputies were conducting the criminal investigation, while the San Diego Police Department was investigating the traffic collision.
