Teen Fatally Struck By Train In San Diego

The 17-year-old bicyclist died at the scene, officials said.

SAN DIEGO, CA — A teenager was fatally struck by a train Friday in San Diego, authorities said.

The 17-year-old boy, who was riding a bicycle, was hit and killed by an Amtrak train at about 12:30 p.m. near the intersection of Sorrento Valley Road and Sorrento Valley Boulevard in San Diego, according to the San Diego County Sheriff's Department.

"Witnesses told deputies three boys riding their bicycles were stopped at the crossing arms to allow a northbound train to pass," Sgt. Jason King said. "After the northbound train passed through, a 17-year-old boy crossed the tracks on his bike not realizing there was also a passing southbound train."

The boy died at the scene, King said. His name was withheld pending family notification.

The other bicyclists were not hurt.
