Women's Museum Of California Invites Public To Share In Community Art Project

The Women’s Museum of California and artist Katie Ruiz are creating a community art installation and the public is invited to take part.

The pompom project is based on the belief, museum officials said, that art is better with community. The art, to be made with many small pompoms to create a piece based on a women’s symbol, will be displayed outside the museum’s Education Center at the Jacobs Center near Chollas View.

The museum will host virtual pompom parties to guide volunteers while remaining socially distant.

Organizers also encourage family participation, as the artwork will be suitable for all ages.

There are a couple of steps to participate:

• Stop by the Jacobs Center, 404 Euclid Ave. and head to the WMC Education Center from 5-6 p.m. Feb. 2 or from 10-11 a.m. Feb. 5 to pick up pompom kits.

• Log onto one of the museum’s virtual pompom parties from 10-11 a.m. Feb. 12, 19 or 26to learn how to create pompoms and meet Ruiz.

• Drop off completed pompoms at the education center from 10-11 a.m. March 5.

The museum also wants to work with clubs, organizations or classes. If interested in hosting an in-person pompom party in February or March, email programs@womensmuseumca.org to learn more.
