San Diegans accustomed to taking international flights out of Los Angeles will soon have a new budget option to get to Tokyo.

A Japan Airlines’ budget carrier said Friday that it will begin service between Los Angeles and Tokyo, becoming the first low-cost airline to fly between Asia and North America.
The new pan-Pacific route, by Zip Air, begins Dec. 25 and will fly nonstop between Tokyo Narita and Los Angeles International Airport three times a week, according to Zip Air.

Becca Doten, a spokeswoman for Los Angeles World Airports, said officials are “thrilled to have Zip Air offer its service at Los Angeles International Airport.”
“There is a growing demand for nonstop flights between LAX and Narita International Airport, and we are pleased that Zip Air shares our desire to provide additional options for our guests who want to experience the food, culture, art and history of Japan and the surrounding region.”
