SAN FRANCISCO — In a city known for its high prices, one fine dining restaurant offers a steak for just $19. The catch? It’s served in an unassuming building on a local college campus.
That building is home to Chef’s Table, a fine dining classroom and laboratory run by students and staff from the Culinary Arts and Hospitality Studies department at the City College of San Francisco.
The bavette steak with pickled mushroom chimichurri, artichokes and pomme puree is the most expensive item on the menu. Other offerings include ricotta agnolotti for $14 and chicken rillettes for $8.
The restaurant operates under the guidance of instructors Malik Francis and Chris Johnson, and features local farms and vendors such as Arcadia’s Produce, Stemple Creek Ranch, Equator Coffee and more.
Located at Smith Hall, 50 Frida Kahlo Way, Chef’s Table is open only for a 90-minute lunch service Monday through Thursday. Reservations are highly recommended and the restaurant is fully booked for April. Spring semester service dates began in January and end on May 14.
