SAN FRANCISCO, CA — Muttville Senior Dog Rescue in San Francisco is waiving all adoption fees for its dogs through May.
The Smooch-a-Pooch Adoptathon started Saturday and will run through May 31, according to Mutville officials.
"California shelters are overwhelmed," Mutville CEO Laurie Routhier said in a statement. "Muttville and all of our Bay Area rescue partners ask for your help by spreading the news so that we can save lives."
Most dogs that arrive at Muttville do so with major health issues that require care and attention from an on-site veterinarian, Muttville officials said.
This includes wellness checks, essential surgeries, dental work or tumor removal before they're allowed to leave for adoption.
"By covering these procedures upfront, we save adopters thousands of dollars in immediate medical costs," Routhier said. "By waiving adoption fees, Muttville aims to attract more potential adopters who care about senior dogs who have been abandoned in their golden years."
People who adopt dogs during this time period will also recieve two-weeks' worth of dog food, a list of cost-effective vet resources and coupons for local pet stores, officials said.
Among the several dogs up for adoption are Slinky, a 72-pound terrier-pitbull mix and Muttville's 14,000th rescue. He recently won Prom King at Muttville Senior Dog Rescue's annual gala.
"Visit Muttville's cage-free shelter in the Mission District and see who approaches you or jumps in your lap for cuddles," officials said. "Muttville invites people to enjoy our warm, inviting shelter, whether or not you can adopt a dog. Muttville is open from 11 AM to 4 PM at 750 Florida St., Tuesday - Sunday."
All dogs at Muttville are seven years and older. For a full list of available dogs, click here.
