SF Surfer Who Died After Beach Rescue Identified

SAN FRANCISCO, CA — A surfer who died following a rescue off San Francisco's Ocean Beach last month has been identified as a beloved husband and dog owner.

A fundraiser posted online Monday identified the surfer as Sandro Britz, a longtime Sunset District resident.

Lifeguards found Brito face down, unconscious, and not breathing in the water off Ocean Beach around 1:20 p.m. on Thursday, May 28.

The lifeguards immediately initiated rescue protocol and began life-saving measures while taking Brito back to the shoreline.

Paramedics arrived soon after and continued with advanced life support before taking Brito to a local hospital where he died. A cause of death has yet to be publicly released.

Brito leaves behind his wife, Michele, and three dogs. They met in Brazil 14 years ago and have been inseparable ever since, according to a GoFundMe started by the couple's friends.

"Now, Michele is left to navigate this new reality alone, managing their housecleaning business and caring for their pets while coping with the grief of losing her soulmate," the GoFundMe said. "Sandro was Michele’s love, her rock, her North star. His sudden passing has left her with a long journey ahead, facing both emotional and financial hardships."

Community members, meanwhile, have rallied around Michelle, raising $19,380 out of its $20,000 goal as of Thursday.
