SAN FRANCISCO, CA — A community hub that was hosting World Cup watch parties in San Francisco has canceled all its remaining events following a shooting that left two people injured Tuesday night.
Spark Social in San Francisco announced all watch parties would be canceled "effective immediately." The move comes as the USA face Bosnia and Herzegovina in the first knockout stage.
"In the interest of protecting the safety of our guests, staff, vendors, and community, we have made the decision to discontinue public World Cup viewing events for the remainder of the tournament," Spark Social said in a statement on social media Wednesday morning.
The popular venue did not reference the shooting in its post. Police say two people were shot along the 600 block of Mission Bay Boulevard — the same block Spark Social is located — soon after Mexico defeated Ecuador in the World Cup.
Both victims are expected to survive, and no arrests have been announced as of Wednesday.
"The World Cup has been an incredible opportunity to bring people together. Seeing our parks filled with the joy, pride, and connection these games inspire has truly been a privilege, according to Spark Social. "We’re deeply saddened that these gatherings must come to an end, but we believe this is the right decision as we prioritize the safety and well-being of our community.:
The community hub's parks remain open for regular business, including dining reservations and family activities. No games will be broadcast.
